The pre-operational security service of GMES is currently provided through the FP7 project G-MOSAIC and the FP6 project LIMES. These two projects, which combine Earth observation technologies with communication and positioning technologies, address the following domains:
- Maritime surveillance: sea border surveillance in and outside Europe, illegal immigration and illegal trafficking surveillance, safety sea lane/piracy/sensitive cargo…
- Infrastructure Surveillance: land border surveillance, critical infrastructure (e.g. pipelines)…
- Support to peace-keeping: population monitoring, resources (water), …
- Support intelligence and early warning
- Support crisis management operations
Before G-MOSAIC and LIMES, several projects dealing with different aspects of security have been funded by European institutions, such as GMFS, GMOSS, MARISS, ...

In the days that have followed the earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, GMES has provided several Civil Protection Authorities as well as international or non governmental associations with rapid mapping.
Practically, two different GMES services were solicited in the aftermath of this major disaster: the GMES Emergency Response Service developed by the SAFER project and the GMES Security Service developed by the G-MOSAIC project. Both were activated on 14 January 2010. Read more...
