Oil Spill in Norway - February 2011

On February 17, 2011, the Icelandic vessel "Godafoss" stranded near the southern Norwegian coast, about 100 km south of Oslo. Two oil tanks of the vessel were breached and an oil spill threatened the Ytre Hvaler Marine National Park.

SAFER was triggered on the same day by the Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) of the European Commission DG Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

Based on Radarsat 2 and Spot 5 imagery, SAFER produced disaster extent maps for the Oslo Fjord and the Hvaler National Park.
