On October 4, 2010, a reservoir dam holding waste of an aluminium plant broke near the village of Kolontár in the Veszprém district of Hungary.
The emergent mud flood mixed with flood water from a stream and swept through the villages of Kolontár, Devecser and Somlóvásárhely and the surrounding coutry, leaving mud that is suspected to be toxic.
Several people were killed and more than a hundred injured by the mud which flooded more than a hundred houses.
The SAFER's focal point was activated by the Hungarian authorities.
SAFER delivered several disaster extent maps:
- A map showed the flood situation on October 6. Water levels were derived through semi-automatic analysis of RADARDAT-2 imagery, a SPOT Image serving as a backdrop;
- A map showed the polluted area extent on October 7. The map was derived through visual analysis of IKONOS Imagery. RapidEye imagery was used for verification and served as a backdrop;
- A map based on a Worldview-2 image gave a detailed view of the broken reservoir on October 9.
