Floods in Germany - January 2011

The combination of snow and ice melting as well as heavy rainfall in the upstream areas of the River Oder and its tributary Warthe caused flooding at a long reach of the Oder at the German-Polish border.

Movements of ice increased the complexity of the hydrological situation and were reported to lead to quickly rising water levels at some localities.

The SAFER's focal point was activated on 8 January 2011 by the BBK.

During the period between 10 and 27 January, SAFER produced 26 disaster extent maps, thus covering several areas along the Elbe River (e.g. Lauenburg, Magdeburg, Rogatz, Parey, Tangermunde, Arneburg, Werben, Boizenburg, Neu Darchau, Danneberg, Gartow, Lenzen, Wittenberge) as well as other areas (e.g. Koblenz, Cologne, etc.).
