The 14th of Febuary 2011, a category 2 tropical cyclone hit the north-eastern coast of Madagascar in the region of Mananara. Wind gusts reaching 220km/h and heavy downpours are sweeping across the northern part of the country. A lot of damages are feared, notably flooding.
SAFER was triggered on the same day by the United Nation World Food Programme (WFP).
Based on Cosmo Skymed, ENVISAT and Radarsat 2 imagery, SAFER provided flood extent maps for the areas of Mahajanga and Mananara.
