Fires in Israel - December 2010

Since the 2nd of December 2010 fires have devastated pine forests and scrubland before sweeping down the slopes of the Mount Carmel towards the Israeli city of Haifa.

Forty two people were killed as a huge brushfire continued to rage across the Carmel Mountains in northern Israel, killing and injuring dozens, among them prison guards and firemen.

Israel called for international aid as the fire blazed out of control, fanned by easterly winds following a month of near record temperatures for the time of year.

The SAFER's focal point was activated on 3 December 2010 by the DSC.

On the day of the activation, SAFER produced an Active Fire Situation Map and the day after, a rapid geographic reference map. A few days after the activation, the project produced:

  • Two disaster extent maps
  • A land cover damage assessment map
  • An urban damage assessment map
