On 21 February 2011, an earthquake of 6.3 magnitude hit the Christchurch area, South Island, New Zealand followed by an aftershock of magnitude 5.6 fifteen minutes later. The epicentre is located 5 km south from Christchurch, second largest city in the country. The first assessment reports 65 dead, a lot of people still trapped and heavy damage.
SAFER was triggered on 22 February 2011 in order to cooperate with the International Charter.
Based on multiple data sources (Worldview, Geoeye1, ALOS-AVNIR 2, Spot 5, Landsat 7), SAFER produced numerous maps including:
- Reference maps for Lyttleton City and Christchurch (region and city centre)
- Damage assessment maps for Christchurch city
- Flood trace maps for the region of Christchurch
