Forest Fires in Greece - August 2011

Following a forest fire which started on 24/08/11 in the Dadia forest in the region of Evros, in the North East of Greece, public authorities declared a state of emergency on 25/08/2011 as fires became uncontrollable.

High winds were fanning the wildfires and hampering operations to extinguish the blaze on many fronts. Many people were evacuated as the fire swept through the forested rural area.

On 26/09/11, the pre-operational GMES emergency management service was triggered by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Based on images acquired from SPOT-5 and RapidEye, first burn scar extent maps were produced on 28/08/11. A third map showing the impact of the fire on vegetation (Damage Assessment Map) was produced on 29/08/11.
