Floods in Cambodia - October 2011

Since August heavy rains and typhoons have affected Cambodia, thus causing overflow from the Mekong River and Tonle River. The worst flooding experienced by Cambodia over the last ten years has affected 17 of 24 provinces.

More than 170 people have died, 100 000 have been displaced and globally more than one million people are affected. More than 10 percent of agricultural land has been inundated and the rice crop will probably be lost. Many roads have been affected and infrastructure has been damaged.

On 11 October 2011, the pre-operational version of the GMES Emergency Management service powered by the SAFER project was triggered by the UN World Food Programme. Following this activation the service has been structured immediately and Data providers contacted.

Based on Radarsat-2 and Landsat images, several disaster extent maps have been produced.
