On the 1st and 2nd of October 2011 heavy downpours hit the area of El Bayadh, 700 km south west of Algiers, leading to deadly flooding within the town of El Bayadh. The flooding has badly affected the population and property: 13 dead, tens of injured, hundreds of destroyed houses, 5 collapsed bridges… at an estimated cost of 6 billion dinars (600 million euros) not counting housing. An emergency shelter has been set up for the flood affected population within an unused factory.
On 6 October 2011, the pre-operational version of the GMES Emergency Management service powered by the SAFER project was triggered in order to collaborate with the International Charter Space and Major Disasters.
Based on Worldview images, extension maps and damage assessment maps have been produced.
