Fires in La Réunion - October 2011

On the afternoon of the 25 October 2011, several wildfires were reported to be burning in the centre of the Reunion National Park, which is registered as a UNESCO world heritage site. According to the report published by the prefecture, about 2700 hectares of forest have been destroyed by the fire that has ravaged the area of Piton Rouge in the Maïdo area.

On 26 October 2011 11:10, the pre-operational version of the GMES Emergency Management Service powered by the SAFER project was triggered by the French Civil Protection.

On 27 October 2011, first disaster extent and damage assessment maps were produced by SAFER based on RapidEye and SPOT5 images. During the following days, several monitoring disaster extent maps were produced.
