A huge fire started on Monday 25 April 2011 in the afternoon, in Hautes Fagnes, a natural reservation area in the east of Belgium. Around 300 firefighters were mobilised to bring the blaze under control as well as a firefighting helicopter. In total, approximately 1,000 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed.
SAFER was triggered on 26 April 2011 by Federale Overheidsdienst Binnenlandse Zaken / Service Public Fédéral Intérieur.
Several reference maps where produced during the period 27-28/04/2011 for the region of Verviers in both raster and vector formats. Based on SPOT5 data, several disaster extent maps where then produced on 01/05/2011 and 02/05/2011 respectively.
The activation was closed on 03/05/2011.
