Crossing Gibraltar Strait

The Gibraltar Strait is well known for its strategical importance. Less known from the general public is the oceanographical role of the strait, where colder Atlantic ocean waters enter the warmer Mediterranean sea.

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and its variations are of foremost use in meteorology and climate forecasts. Life in seas and oceans is also highly depending on water temperature (for instance phytoplankton is more abundant where the temperature is low).

The GMES marine service implemented by MyOcean provides an accurate monitoring of sea surface temperature, as illustrated by the video available on the MyOcean website.
