More on geoland2...

geoland2 started on 1st September 2008 and will last for 50 months, with an estimated total cost of EUR 32.5 Millions. The project is partly funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

geoland2 prepares the operational capabilities of the GMES Land Service, through the development of 3 Core Mapping Services (CMS) and 7 Core Information Services (CIS).

The 3 Core Mapping Services produce basic geo-information on land cover and land use and its annual and seasonal changes. They also include a variety of additional biophysical parameters describing the continental vegetation state, the radiation budget at the surface and the water cycle.

These Core Mapping Services form the basis for more elaborated geo-information services, the Core Information Services (CIS), which address a wide variety of thematic fields of application, like water monitoring, forest monitoring, spatial planning (including urban planning), agri-environmental monitoring (AgriEnv), carbon cycle monitoring, natural resource monitoring (NARMA) or global crop monitoring (GCM).

geoland2 is undertaken by a consortium led by Astrium and composed of 50 partners. It also involves 171 collaborating user organisations.
