The western and southern parts of Sri Lanka have been facing heavy flooding caused by torrential monsoon rains, which have resulted in flash floods, high winds, landslides, lightning and thunder storms.
These floods have affected almost 200000 people who have been displaced or evacuated.
The SAFER's focal point was activated on 18/05/10 by the UN World Food Programme in order to support relief operations.
On 21 May 2010, a first disaster extent map was produced, based on data extracted from ASAR data and compared with pre-disaster data extracted from TerraSAR-X imagery. It covered the districts of Colombo and Gampaha
On 23 May 2010, further detailed disaster extent maps were produced, showing the situation on 22 May 2010 for several districts.
