Continuing heavy rains have caused floods in the region of Krakow, thus leading to the evacuation of thousands people.
On Sunday 16 May 2010 evening the Vistula river rose above emergency levels.
On Monday 17 May 2010 morning, the river was flowing more than 70 cm above emergency limits. Further upstream, on the border between Malopolska and Silesia, that level stood at almost 130 cm above emergency limits.
The SAFER's focal point was activated on 19 May 2010 by the National HQ of the State Fire Service of Poland.
On 20 May 2010, SAFER delivered rapid reference space maps for the following areas in southern Poland, using Landsat5 data acquired in April 2010:
- Bielsko-Biala and Katowice Powiats (1:75 000);
- Krakow, Tarnow and Kielce Powiats (1:125 000);
- Tarnow, Kielce and Tarnobrzeg Rzeszow Powiats (1:125 000).
On Friday 21 May 2010 a first impact map was produced, showing the situation on 19 May 2010 in the area of Tarnobrzeg Powiat and Sandomierz. The map was built with data extracted from ERS-2 data.
Several impact and extent maps followed during the period 22-28 May 2010, covering different areas among which Glogow, Bielsko-Biala, Katowice, Wroclaw, Zielona Gora and Brzeg.
