End of July 2010, heavy rainfalls caused record flooding in Pakistan, especially along the Kabul River in the north-western part of the country. In mid-August the state of emergency was reinforced in the southern province of Sindh due to the flood spreading in this region.
Present estimates indicate that over two thousand people have died and over a million homes have been destroyed since the flooding began. The United Nations estimate that more than twenty million people are injured or homeless.
The SAFER's focal point was activated on Friday 30 July 2010 by the United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP).
SAFER delivered first reference maps on 01 August 2010. Since the date of the activation, SAFER provided almost 30 flood extent maps and damage assessment maps covering the north-west of Pakistan along the Kabul river (Peshawar, Nowshera, Addezai, Akora Kattak, Shaidu, Warsak, Shabqadar, Mian Pujjar, Charsadda, Kheshgi) as well as the south-east of the country along the Indus river (Dadu, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shahdadkot, Larkana).
