Eyjafjallajökull Monitoring - April 2010

In addition to the scientific information brought by the GMES atmosphere and emergency response service projects MACC and SAFER in support to EU Member State authorities, SAFER was activated on 21/04/2010 in order to cooperate with the International Charter Space and Major Disasters and help monitoring the activity of the Volcano on a daily basis thanks to high resolution optical images.

A document dated 12 May 2010 describes how SAFER is contributing to the monitoring of the volcanic activity through two main products:

  • "Volcanic plume ash loading", which shows the detection of the volcanic ask cloud and a preliminary estimation of several characteristics (volcanic ash mass, aerosol optical depth and particle effective radius;
  • "Forecast of ash dispersion", which show forecasting maps of ash concentration.
