EU Command Post Exercise - June 2010

Exercise location
Events' location

An exercise for European Civil Protections was performed in Southern France (Aude) during the period 1-4 June 2010.

The GMES project SAFER actively participated in this exercise, called "EU Command Post 2010", which aimed at simulating emergency response operations after an earthquake hit the region, causing damages to buildings, communication infrastructures, transport networks, etc.

For the purpose of the exercise, five different zones ("Command Posts") were defined, four of them being located on the Mediterranean coast. In addition to the damages (e.g. building destructions) directly caused by the fictitious earthquake in these zones, different types of disasters also caused by the earthquake were considered during the exercise, among which landslides, fires, floods, industrial accidents and transportation accidents.

Around 40 different maps were produced by SAFER, thus providing civil protection authorities with information on collapsed building (e.g. dwellings, industrial plants), damages caused by floods or landslides. These products demonstrated the valuable inputs that Earth Observation information can bring to emergency response management.
