Earthquake in China - April 2010

On April 14, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit the Yushu prefecture in the Qinghai province of China, followed by several aftershocks. Many hundred people were reported dead, injured or missing. Buildings collapsed or were severly damaged. Road network and communication lines were interrupted.

Several maps were generated by the SAFER project:

  • A first reference map was generated on 14 April 2010. It shows a predisaster overview of the most affected area (based on a Landsat-7 image acquired in October 2000);
  • A first damage assessment map was produced on 15 April 2010, based on a SPOT-5 image acquired on 15 April 2010. The map shows a post-disaster overview of the most affected area, where potentially blocked roads are marked;
  • A second damage assessment map was produced on 16 April 2010, based on a GeoEye scene acquired on 15 April 2010. The map includes road layers and infrastructure information.
