SAFER started on 1st January 2009 and will last for 36 months, with an estimated total cost of EUR 39.3 Millions. The project is partly funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.
SAFER implements and validates the preoperational versions of the GMES Emergency Response Service. In first priority, the project concentrates on rapid mapping during the response phase, with a response time objective of six hours after the emergency situation for the provision of reference mapping and of 24 hours for the provision of assessment maps.
SAFER will extend the use of its products to early warning (before the emergency situation occurs) and to reconstruction (after the emergency situation has occurred).
SAFER is undertaken by a consortium led by Astrium Geo-information services and composed of 55 partners. The consortium is built around a core team of European industry and research institutes. It includes users such as civil protection authorities from EU Member States as well as users from UN agencies.
