The European Space Agency (ESA) gave its green-light to Belgium for the development of an observation satellite called Proba V(egetation) and planned to be launched in 2011-2012.
The development of this satellite will cost €46 million and is led by a Belgium consortium.
In the frame of GMES, the objective of this satellite is to ensure the continuity of Vegetation pictures actually taken by two multispectral instruments aboard SPOT-4 and SPOT-5.
Vegetation is the first mission in space ever realised jointly by the European Commission, France (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), Belgium (SpF Scientific Policy), Sweden (SSC) and Italy (ASI) as outlined by ESA.
