Following the devastating Cyclone Nargis across Myanmar, the International Charter on 'Space and Major Disasters' which provides a unified system of space data acquisition and delivery to those affected by natural or man-made disasters through authorized users, has been activated. Satellite imagery has been provided to support the relief efforts in Myanmar.
On 10 May mapping of the 'Irrawaddy Division', the country’s rice bowl and one of the most populated areas in Burma, was delivered through Respond by using radar satellite data in order to see through cloud and to complete the capture of the extent of the devastating flooding.
According to recent reports of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of the Humanitarian Affairs, production of additional radar mapping of the flooded regions is underway due to the bad weather forecast.
