België neemt deel in verschillende satellietprogramma’s dietoepassingen hebben of zullen hebben in het domein van leefmilieu enveiligheid:

• PROBA 1, is een demonstratiesatelliet die twee aardobservatie-instrumenten aan boord heeft: Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) en High Resolution Camera (HRC)
• VEGETATION (in samen werking met Frankrijk, Zweden, Italië en EC) is een instrument aan boord van SPOT 4 en 5 voor het monitoren van vegetatie op wereldschaal.
• SCIAMACHY is een instrument aan boord van ENVISAT om spoorgassen in de atmosfeer te monitoren.
• GERB is een instrument aan boord van MSG om de netto opwarming van de aarde te monitoren.
• PLEIADES (in collaboratie met Frankrijk, Zweden, Spanje en Oostenrijk), zijn twee kleine satellieten die o.a. een antwoord bieden op Europese burgerbehoeften.
• HELIOS IIA (in samenwerking met Frankrijk en Spanje), voor militaire hoge resolutie observaties.
• SAOCOM (in samenwerking met Argentinië), is een radarmissie met hoge resolutie en wereldbedekking als operationele modes.

• SCIAMACHY : instrument qui contrôle les gaz en trace dans l’atmosphère à bord d’ENVISAT
• GERB : instrument qui mesure le réchauffement total de la Terre à bord de MSG
• PLEIADES (en collaboration avec la France, la Suède, l’Espagne et l’Autriche) : fournit l’imagerie satellitaire destinée à satisfaire au mieux les demandes européennes sur le plan civil et militaire
• HELIOS IIA (en collaboration avec la France et l’Espagne) fournit une observation à haute résolution à des fins militaires
• SAOCOM (en collaboration avec l’Argentine) : mission radar à haute résolution et modes opérationnels de couverture planétaire

La Belgique envisage de construire deux satellites : l’un considéré comme suite à l’instrument VEGETATION à bord des satellites SPOT, l’autre consistant en une mission atmosphérique, appelée ALTIUS, dont le but est de mesurer l’ozone et d’autres composants chimiques dans l’atmosphère.
